Question for Matt B, Xavier D, Kaycee D, Cequita E, and Cashendra J. Describe the make-up, the jurisdiction, and caseload of the S.C. Supreme Court. For sake of comparison, the United States Supreme Court with 9 justices only has full hearing and detailed decisions on about 75-100 cases each year in recent history. As recently as 20 years ago they were hearing twice that many. But in any case this should give you some appreciation of how hard our state Supreme Court justices are working.

The South Carolina Supreme Court is made up of the Chief Justice and his four associate justices. They are elected on a ten year term and their terms can run at different times for as long as they wish. The Supreme Court is THE decision maker in the state. Each year the South Carolina Supreme Court reviews about 3,000 cases. The Supreme Court deals with appeals from circuit and family courts, the death penalty, public utility rates, constitutional issues, public bond issues, elections, certiorari from court of appeals, and appeals from master-in-equity. All of the small state courts must answer to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court gives opinion on the most critical cases in the state and often times even those cases can be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court of South Carolina has a chief justice and four additional justices. The Supreme Court in S.C. deals with the major issues and court cases which the state has. Many times this is also the appeals which are send up from the state court. The South Carolina Supreme Court hears roughly 3,000 cases per year, or thirty times that of the United States Supreme Court, and that is with less than half the justices the US Supreme Court has. This shows how busy they are. The Supreme Court in SC, just as in the US Supreme Court is with regards to the country, is the final decision maker for state cases. Many smaller cases may get appealed up to the state supreme level, as you can see with over 3,000 cases heard per year, but the state supreme court also hears the major cases in state, dealing anywhere from death penalty to state taxes.

The Supreme Court in S.C. has one supreme justice and four Associate Justices who are elected by the General Assembly to sever ten years. Unlike the U.S. Supreme Court who review 75-100 cases each year, the S.C. Supreme court according to text review about 3000 cases and issue between 250 and 300 full opinions. The cases that the S.C. Supreme Court usually deals with are death penalty, public utility rates, major constitutional issues, public bond disputes, and election law violations. All of the state courts will follow the decision made by S.C. Supreme Court. If the S.C. Supreme Court decision were to be appealed, the cases would be handed over to the United States Supreme Court.
The South Carolina Supreme Court consists of one Chief Justice and four associate justices who are elected at staggaring ten year terms. South Carolina is one of 19 states that has this five member court. The supreme court is the ultimate decision maker in amy case under South Carolina law. The court is the appellate body that reviews cases that have already been decided within a trial setting in a lower level court. The court reviews about 3,000 cases and issue between 250-300 full opinions a year. In 1983, the Court of Appeals was created which allowed the Supreme Court to offset some of its appellate jurisdiction workload there.

All four answers were very good, so I will make no further comments on this one (though you should make sure that you put your name on the answers -- one of these fine answers had not name on it, so unless they contact me, they will get no credit!)
