Political Parties – Question 3
Question for Kaycee D. Cequita E, and CoShendra J. Briefly describe the structure of both political parties in South Carolina. Each party has its own website that gives a lot of information about the parties and events, though the center focus today is on the upcoming presidential primaries. See the Democrat’s website at http://www.scdp.org/ and the Republican’s at http://www.scgop.com/.

The structure of the Democratic Party from the website seems to be much more laid back and more relaxed along with a professional setting. The website gives important information about what events they have going on along with important events that have recent happened such as the Republican State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel indictment over charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. The Republican website seems to have a little less information along with the website being a little more uptight. They seem to be much more focus than the Democrats but also boring. They also do not include the indictment charges of Republican State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel on there website.

I found that the Republicans website was very professionally set and focuses on the Republicans party while the Democrats website gave much information about events going on among the party and an article about the Republican State Treasurers charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. It was interesting to find this on the Democrats website but not the Republicans
Both Cequita and whoever did the second comment (Kaycee???) focused on the website rather than the structure of the two parties as described on pp. 348-9 in the text.
Each party has a triangular structure with precincts at the bottom - the most local level. At the precinct level each party has officers (chairs at a minimum) and delegates to the next level -- the county level.
Each county has annual conventions and an executive committee to run the county party during the year. The convention chooses a county chair oand other officers, as well a state executive committee member and delegates to the state convention, the next level.
The state level has several elements, including the state convention, state committee comprised of members from each of the counties and a state chair, the most visible spokesperson for the party. However, each also has an executive director, a full time paid position that runs the staff at the state offices. Those offices perform a lot of functions like maintaining the website, sending out newsletters, providing workshops for candidates, raising money, organizing get out the vote drives (called gotv) and so on. If the party has the governorship, the state chair and executive director are expected to support the governor.
